Motionpoems is a nonprofit poetry film initiative I co-founded and co-direct with producer / designer / art director Angella Kassube. Our mission is to broaden the audience for poetry by turning great contemporary poems into short films for big-screen and online distribution.

We began in 2008 by working with my own poems … then we began involving other animators …

… and other poets (see more at… and soon we had a full-scale production company on our hands!

In 2011 we successfully completed a fundraising campaign on, and … 254 backers later … we were in business.









Announcing: A pilot-year collaboration in 2011 with Best American Poetry.

In 2012, Motionpoems will begin unveiling a dozen new films based on poems in Scribner’s 2011 volume of Best American Poetry. Films are already in progress on poems by Richard Wilbur, Matthew Dickman, Jane Hirshfield, and series editor David Lehman.

A dozen new 2012 Motionpoems will premiere in Minneapolis at Open Book, 1011 Washington Avenue, on October 25th, 2011, with two screenings: 6pm and 8pm. Free and open to the public.
